Rooms with a View - Moscow Dining

By Rollo Tomasi
Great place for international dating

Sex…this place oozes sex!” cooed my date for the evening, loosening her hand from mine and wandering the mood lit rooms of The Sky Lounge.  Enthralled by the sensual intimacy of the bar area and restaurant, She reminded me of Alice landing for the first time in Wonderland.
Every metropolis has its tower bar with accompanying iconic view that defines its city. In New York it’s Pen Top, In Vegas its Rio.  In Moscow it’s The Sky Lounge.

The lounge/restaurant complex sits atop the Russian Academy of Sciences building, itself a radical work of Soviet art in Leninsky Hills near the Gagarin Monument in Gagarin Square. One of Moscow’s most famous architectural landmarks, the Academy, built in the 50’s, achieves just what it’s political builders hoped for…shock and awe. From the front gates through the open courtyard, one is immediately struck with the scale of Soviet design that surrounds you as you stride through the soft snow towards the entrance to the building with the “Brains” on top.

Once in the golden elevator you’re shot up 22 floors where doors open to a much different and utterly tantalizing environment.

The warm and enticing atmosphere, the dramatic, sweeping views and choice restaurant, combine to make your drinking and dining experience a sensual feast. Turn key seduction of the highest order.

Come for dinner or you can hang at the bar and surrounding sofa and pillowed lounge with dark hardwood floors that spawn glass windows to the ceiling. You’ll take in a bird’s eye view of the entirety of Moscow including the Kremlin and all Seven Sisters. The scene leaves you believing you could jump and reach the winding Moscow River which cuts a swath through the city from the banks and thick green park below the Lounge. The terrace opens during the summer months to lend a breath of fresh air and sun on your face.

Oh yes, and there’s the restaurant…a most fabulous restaurant that serves up spectacular French, Japanese and Russian cuisine. The meals are splendidly presented and totally delectable. And there’s something for every taste.

Start with the Asparagus bundle with Italian omelet and truffle oil or Tomino cheese and Parma ham. For your main course go with Blue Tuna Rolls, crisp vegetables and Unagi sauce or Carpaccio with smoked duck breast fillet and fresh foie gras marinated in Armagnac. Top it off with warm brioche filled with wild cherry and bitter chocolate sorbet or a perfect Creme Brulee’.

The menu is extensive and everything we had was excellent. It’s the type of eatery where you’re looking over at your company’s plate wanting a taste.

There’s a wide list of premium wines and an extensive selection of cigars is also available.

Anytime is good to marvel at the view while enjoying a culinary feast. From a slow burning sunset to a snowy evening when the city lights burn hot through a veil of falling silver…the view should not to be missed.  For those of you who want to leave your date in a state of breathless rapture, the view from The Sky Lounge is a must on any visit to Moscow.

Cap the night with an equally dramatic visual experience at the top of the Ritz Carlton which boasts an epic, yes, mind bending view of Red Square and the Kremlin. The rooftop bar has what Muscovites claim is the most dramatic view in the world. On a cold snow drift night, the scene of Red Square and the Kremlin, from the Military Historic Museum, straight down Red Square to St. Basil’s and beyond, is the stuff first kisses are made of.
