Intermarriage on the Rise: No Surprises Here…

International Coupe with Latin girl and American man

International marriage is becoming more mainstream with a recent study confirming interracial marriage in the U.S. has more than doubled since 1980. Asian and Hispanic women and white men, black and Hispanic men and white women, Asian men and white women: in our modern age the world is becoming even more of a cultural melting pot.

The encouraging study from the Pew Research Center, ‘The Rise of Intermarriage’, shows around 15% of all newlyweds in 2010 were from different ethnic groups or races (compared with 6.7% in 1980) with one partner being white. Also reflecting the growing occurrence of such beautiful unions, public opinion is now far more welcoming to such marriages with Pew finding that 87% of Americans are either OK or positive about interracial marriages.

Globalization, increasing travel and the familiarity with other cultures has clearly played an important part in this trend. Long may it continue…
